The Nakazato family kiln

Photos for “The road back to Karatsu,” Kyoto Journal Issue 97: Next Generations

This kiln and studio is located in an idyllic valley in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, where the Nakazato family has been creating Karatsu-style pottery for 14 generations — in fact, their name is practically synonymous with the area’s long history as a pottery center in Japan. Kenta Nakazato, age 27 at the time this piece was published, was positioned to take over the family kiln until he decided to pursue a career in tailoring and moved to Tokyo. But something drew him back to the clay, glaze, and wood of Karatsu.
